The Opportunity Yet, as coastal communities continue to see an influx of both tourists and retirees, communities are facing large increases in traffic and the number of condominiums, second homes, resorts, and strip developments. Meanwhile, many communities have seen unemployment rise and their local economies sour with the decline of traditional natural resource industries. The changes happening on the coast are substantial, and provide a chance for citizens to work together to envision and create a vibrant future for coastal families and communities. To take advantage of this opportunity, 1000 Friends of Oregon has launched the Oregon Coastal Futures Project in partnership with the Oregon Downtown Development Association and the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition. Project
Description and Goals
To achieve these aims, the Coastal Futures Project will:
Timeline The Project began in 2003 by interviewing a broad range of coastal leaders to identify opportunities and build alliances, and by looking at data on coastal trends in employment, transportation, natural resources, and more. As part of the project, 1000 Friends plans to open a regional office on the mid-coast. As part of an outreach and education effort throughout the project, the Coastal Futures website has been launched and will be updated regularly with news and resources. We are conducting public outreach throughout the project and in 2005 began holding a series of regional visioning forums, followed Design Action Team support of community development projects. In 2005-2008,
the project will work in selected communities to implement strategies
developed through earlier work. Upon completion of the project, 1000 Friends
expects to maintain its coastal office in order to support ongoing efforts
to improve the livability of the coast, for Oregons coastal communities
and our families, into the future. |
