Our work aims to strengthen ties between community assets and encourage investment in new employment and recreational opportunities. Joining together on the project are 1000 Friends of Oregon, City of Garibaldi, Economic Development Council of Tillamook County (EDC), and Port of Garibaldi. Through the generous support of Coastal Future Project contributors and the pro bono services of Design Action Team members, 1000 Friends of Oregon was able to offer services for strategic support to a coastal community development project. 1000 Friends publicly solicited project proposals, reviewed applications, and awarded services to Garibaldi. The Connections Project was selected among many proposals in part because of its ability to provide a replicable model for the revitalization of other small coastal communities. The team met with community members in an onsite workshop in Garibaldi on Monday, November 7 and Tuesday, November 8, 2005. The culmination of that work is reflected in the the following report and figures containing recommendations on community projects, implementation strategy, and funding resources:
The Connections Project Design Action Team work is only one step as Garibaldi moves forward. The community is currently undertaking notable related efforts: an update of its Comprehensive Plan, study of creation of an urban renewal district, and redevelopment of the Old Mill property adjacent to the harbor. The Connections Project is intended to dovetail into those and future efforts. It is our hope that the work done by community members and Coastal Futures Project partners will enable the community to systematically work toward a better future for Garibaldi. "We believe collaborating on this project will not only help Garibaldi achieve local goals," explains Bob Stacey, Executive Director of 1000 Friends of Oregon, "but also provide a model for building stronger communities elsewhere on the coast and throughout Oregon." The Design Action Team for the Garibaldi Connections Project is comprised of four professionals:
